Lodge History for Newport Lodge #234 F&AM in Newport Tennessee. Originally Chartered in 1806 under the (at the time) Grand Lodge Of North Carolina and Tennessee as NC Lodge #50 and TN Lodge # 4. Newport Lodge was one of 9 TN lodges to found the Grand Lodge Of Tennessee and in 1816 that occurred by the state of NC granting Tennessee a separate Grand Lodge. At that time Newport became TN Lodge # 4. ( We still have our original charter from 1806 bearing both NC & TN Lodge numbers. During the dark days following the Morgan Affair and the Civil War the charter was lost and was regained again in 1866 ad Newport Lodge #234 F&AM, little is known as to why but due to fires and floods and the harsh times following the civil war hardly any records remain for the time span. Our present lodge building was built in 1874 by Freemasons to be used as a masonic lodge and served as the first grammar school in Newport, the building has seen continuous use as Newport’s Masonic Lodge since it’s construction in 1874. The Lodge is two story brick construction with the downstairs configured for kitchen and dining hall ( 4 tables still in use are original to the building from 1875) kitchen and dining hall updated in 2017, the lodge hall is upstairs with elevator added in mid 2000’s to accommodate handicapped and elderly brothers. The stationed officers chairs and some lodge furniture in the meeting room/ lodge hall is original to the lodge from 1875. The members currently meet on the first Monday of each month at 7:30pm, the lodge has practice on the second and fourth Friday of each month at 7:00pm. Currently the lodge has approximately 130 members. Also the downstairs kitchen and dining hall can be rented for various functions with accommodation for around 80 people, Newport Masonic Lodge reserves the right to allow use of or refuse to allow the lodge kitchen and dining hall to be used by any party at its discretion.
